Georgia Lawmakers Renew Push for Gambling Expansion

I came across an update on Georgia's gambling laws, and it looks like legislators are making another attempt to legalize casino gambling and sports betting. This time, they're proposing a constitutional amendment—meaning voters would have the final say. The new resolution, SR 131, suggests issuing at least eight casino licenses, allowing online betting, and setting a 20% tax rate. The revenue would go into a Georgia Gaming Proceeds Fund, with the first $2 billion distributed to counties and at least 5% of extra funds dedicated to gambling addiction services.
Georgia lawmakers have been pushing for gambling expansion for years, but every attempt has hit roadblocks. Last year’s version, which had a lower tax rate and fewer licenses, didn’t get enough support, and other efforts to expand sports betting have also stalled. Still, this new proposal seems more ambitious, possibly giving it a better chance. If it makes it through the legislature, voters will have the final say on whether casinos and online betting become legal in Georgia.
With so many states embracing gambling for its economic benefits, it’s interesting to see Georgia still debating it. Do you think this time it will pass, or will opposition block it again?

It’s about time! Georgia's been dragging its feet on this for ages. I think with so many states cashing in on gambling, they have to get on board. Just hope they don’t mess it up again like last time.

Yeah, I’m curious too! 🙄 But you know how it goes—there’s always some folks who get super emotional about gambling being “bad.” I think if they can show how the funds would help communities, it might sway some voters.
